A Radiant Engagement at El Paso's Smuggler's Pass in the Franklin Mountains
As an El Paso engagement photographer, one of my favorite parts of this job is getting to meet so many incredible couples and helping bring their vision to life. Every couple has a different story, a different personality, and a different idea of what they want their photos to feel like, and that's what makes every session so special.
When Bianca first reached out to me, she immediately mentioned how much she loved bright, colorful photos. She wanted an engagement session that felt joyful and vibrant. I knew right away we were going to create something beautiful together.
After talking through location ideas, we decided on one of El Paso's most iconic landscapes—the Franklin Mountains. More specifically, Smuggler's Pass, located just off Transmountain Road.
Smuggler's Pass: A Hidden Gem for Engagement Photos in El Paso
If you're looking for a location that showcases the beauty of the Franklin Mountains without requiring a long hike, Smuggler's Pass is one of my favorite recommendations.
Located near the summit of Transmountain Road, the trailhead offers stunning mountain views almost immediately. It's also one of the best places to see the famous rock formation many locals call the "Elephant on the Mountain." The desert scenery, warm mountain tones, and wide-open views make it a beautiful backdrop for couples wanting a true West Texas feel.
While the walk isn't difficult, I always recommend bringing comfortable shoes to wear between photo spots. You can always change into your dress shoes or heels once we reach the best locations.
Why I Always Recommend an Engagement Session Before Your Wedding
Bianca and Jesus will be getting married next year, and I couldn't be more excited to photograph their wedding day.
One thing I always recommend to my wedding couples is scheduling an engagement session beforehand. It's so much more than simply taking beautiful photos.
An engagement session gives us the opportunity to spend time together before your wedding day. You get to experience what it feels like being in front of my camera, learn how I guide you through poses, and become comfortable simply enjoying each other's company while I document those moments.
By the time your wedding day arrives, it feels like we're seeing old friends again instead of meeting your photographer for the first time. That comfort always shines through in your wedding gallery.
And of course, engagement photos are perfect for save-the-dates, wedding invitations, your wedding website, guest books, or even displaying around your reception. Most importantly, they're a chance to document this exciting season of your lives before you say "I do." Years from now, you'll be able to look back at these photos and remember all of the excitement leading up to your wedding day.
Styling the Session
One of my favorite parts of Bianca and Jesus' engagement session was seeing how much thought they put into every detail of their outfits. Bianca planned two different looks that showcased her personality and complemented the desert landscape beautifully. Before the session, she shared that pink was her favorite color, so her first outfit was a gorgeous flowing pink dress that added movement and color against the earthy tones of the Franklin Mountains. She even had a stunning pink engagement ring, which added such a unique touch to their session.
Jesus paired the look perfectly with a blue button-up shirt featuring black accents, creating a color palette that photographed beautifully together. To complete their first look, they both wore cowboy boots and hats that matched their outfits, adding a fun Texas touch that felt authentic to them.
For their second look, Bianca changed into a short black dress with colorful embroidered details. She even changed her hairstyle, which made the second half of the session feel completely different while still staying true to her. Small changes like a second outfit or a different hairstyle can make your gallery feel much more diverse without needing a second location.
A Texas Twist on the Champagne Pop
One of my favorite moments from the session happened because of a simple conversation.
Bianca and Jesus shared that they wanted their wedding to really embrace being in Texas. They planned on serving Lone Star beers to their family and friends during their celebration and wanted to incorporate that part of their story into their engagement photos.
Instead of doing a traditional champagne pop, I suggested, "Why don't we do a beer pop instead?"
They immediately loved the idea.
The result was one of the most fun parts of the entire session. It perfectly reflected their personalities while adding a unique touch that made their gallery feel even more personal. Moments like these are exactly why I encourage my couples to bring meaningful props or ideas to their session. Whether it's your favorite drink, flowers, vintage cameras, or something that represents your relationship, those little details help tell your story.
Chasing Golden Hour on Transmountain
As the sun began to set, we made our way to the top of the trail, where the Franklin Mountains put on one of the most beautiful golden hour displays on Transmountain Road. The warm light washed over the landscape, creating a soft, dreamy glow that made every photo feel timeless.
It's one of the many reasons I love photographing couples in El Paso, the desert comes alive as the sun dips behind the mountains.
Bianca and Jesus embraced every moment together, laughing, holding each other close, and soaking in the views. As the sky transitioned from warm golden tones to soft pastel colors, we captured some of my favorite images of the entire session.
